The deck's construction, all in many many photos.

Here's the run-down, from start-to-finish, of the deck! Some of the photos are repeats, and this post is pretty photo-heavy, but... well, it was a long process! Here we go!

The "BEFORE" photos, as in "before everything started"...

And then the lilac trees had to be trimmed and hacked and pic-axed before we could move forward with our first stone:

Then it was time to put the first boards into place...

Once all the boards got into place though, we had to figure out a temporary solution so we could get from the front door to the stairs. Some furry creatures loved onlooking at the new board arrangement.

Finally, we had all the  boards into place (though I constantly realized I needed more in certain places) and had the lilac trees sufficiently framed. Time to add a few deck boards! I still had more work to do further down, but I couldn't wait to get a few deck boards into place.

Alas, with that was the end of the deck boards for a while. I needed to create a step from the kitchen before I added any more, as well as frame out where the deck would go into the stone staircase.

That staircase one was frustrating, so I opted to take out a lot of boards for it so I wouldn't have to lug myself and lumber over lots of trippable boards. So began the process of then putting the boards AND adding lots of bolts and additional supporting beams on the second half of the deck....

Alas, the poor gate will have to wait a while until my hanging supports arrive in the mail.

This poor hen was in for a surprise. All proud of herself for getting to the top of the board, she tried to hop off and ended up sliding ALL the way down. Once at the bottom, she was a bit dumbfounded as to how she ended up there.

Finally, all the supports and framework were done!

So, boards could be added. However, since the space isn't entirely square (loathe, sigh, frustrating), this required some extra geometry when cutting the pieces to trim...

Unfortunately, I worked my way to the end... and I was a few boards shy. So, here's how you transport that many boards in a sedan:

Ahh, Goldie, you're a trooper.

And finally, with those boards in, VOILA: A NEW DECK! Here she is, from all her glorious angles, unstained and unfinished, but you get the idea:

With the deck done, it was the canopy's turn. As you can see, the canopy is semi-shaded. It lets light in, but not 100%. LOVE!

All this work was very hard work to a certain corgi. Check out the upright ear on the tree.

And then finally, it was time to pick up the patio set:

And once together, the final thing to do was to have people over (the blankets are on the ground so no additional scratches/spillage on the unstained/unsealed deck would occur!):

Not pretty shabby though, going from this:

to this:

We're pretty happy. And tired.

The deck!

This was our back terrace (the southern third, at least) BEFORE:

After much hard work, reading, researching, lugging, building, swearing, screwing, drilling, bruising, cutting, sneezing, tripping, fingernail chipping, and dancing, here is the AFTER:

Looks just a little bit different, huh?

I still need to stain and sand the deck, and the gate hardware is on it's way... so there will be a few more photos. But still-- you get the idea. Siiigh! So relaxing. :)

Gate Hardware

This week it's been rainy, so I've moved on to things that can get done... but inside. Things like figuring out how our gate is going to hang.

I bought these bolts from Home Depot. They were called "lag bolts," but the better term (for googling, at least) is "lag gate bolts"... and if you want to feel creepy, insert the additional term "male." Yes, really.
But, I was not happy with these.

First off, the metal was rough. The bolts were this garish silver. Plus, they're not really... nice-looking.

Well, the bolt tip was too big for out gate, so I got to play at this game again.

Let me just say: It's hard to find things on google when you have no idea what to call "a pointy thing that screws onto a gate post that you hang a gate on."

Luckily, several searches later, I discovered a new term: "pintel."

I'm not sure if that's just the term used for the pointy things that hold SHUTTERS up, but regardless, this will (likely, hopefully) do the trick:
4" long, 2.5" across, room for three screws. Plus, this is a smaller gate, so I think that this set-up will provide enough support.

But HOT DANG, they're expensive. Luckily, these were on sale for more than 50% off. Whew.

I must admit I'm a smidge nervous that it will stick out too far... but I did err on the side of caution when spacing out the posts, so here's hoping. They make ones that are not so sticky-outy, but... they're a smidge (ok, more than a smidge) more expensive.

So, fingers crossed.

Deck progress!

Well, the deck is coming along. We went away for the weekend, so I only had this afternoon to work on it, but, it's still coming along! Above: The staircase-- the deck is built into it. The two posts are for our gate.

The step coming out of the kitchen is finished...

And is being enjoyed. It's as if she thought I built her a corgi-sized deck.

Speaking of helpers, here's the helper hen. Not much help without thumbs to use the level...

Remember the gate I mentioned above?

It's going to get this gate!

There are deckplanks on about 8' so far...

And most the second half is supported and pillars put in. (ignore the split one; I didn't have to put anything on that beam, so the fact that it split is no biggie.

Only a few more inserts to go!

So, that's where I'm at. finishing up small things, then deckboards!

Corgi Coffee

The corgi girls and I went to go get coffee this morning. Well, coffee for me, biscuits for them. They LOVED it. They are both getting along so well-- it warms my heart!

Corgis love water

Maddie loves her kiddie pool. But, we found out (when filling up the kiddie pool) that Roxy LOVES hose water.

And I captured it on video. Watch here: Corgi water video.

Yes, completely ridiculous!

Tree cut-outs!

This is what happens when I get off from work an hour early!

Very exciting stuff. Our lilac trees are now popping up through the new deckboards!

You may notice the old boards on the bottom. That's so no rocks will spill out through the bottom when I fill the tree cutouts with river rock. :)

More to come tomorrow!

Fowl Humor

Good gosh-- I love this. It cracks me up.
